The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon was run on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the 50th anniversary of the five-borough course, in cool, cloudy conditions of around 9°C. Sweden's Andreas Almgren won the men's race in 2:06:01 in his first ever marathon, and Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui won the women's race in 2:24:36 for her second New York title. Around 60,000 runners took part.

This page is kept as a reference for the professional results. For the pacing story behind the men's winner, see Andreas Almgren's NYC Marathon splits.

Men's results: top 10

Place Athlete Country Time
1 Andreas Almgren Sweden 2:06:01
2 Yemaneberhan Crippa Italy 2:06:14
3 Kamohelo Mofolo Lesotho 2:06:26
4 Benson Kipruto Kenya 2:06:27
5 Haftu Strintzos Australia 2:06:34

8 Ahmed Muhumed USA 2:07:09
9 Geoffrey Kamworor Kenya 2:07:09
10 Ryan Ford USA 2:07:17

Conner Mantz, the top American in Boston and a pre-race contender, was 11th in 2:07:27. Sources differ on whether Kondo or Muhumed took seventh, with both credited at 2:07:08 or 2:07:09; the official New York Road Runners results settle it.

How the men's race unfolded. With no pacemakers, the field went through 5K in 15:30 and halfway in 1:04:01, with American Zouhair Talbi nominally leading and a huge group packed behind him: at mile 17 the top 17 men were within three seconds. Ten men were still together at 25K (1:15:41) and at 35K (1:45:33), where the first ten were separated by less than a second. Defending champion Benson Kipruto surged on the Fifth Avenue hill around 38 km, Almgren and Crippa went with him, and at 59th Street, with the Italian two metres back, Almgren shifted gears and ran the last stretch through Central Park alone. He covered the final 7.195 km in 20:27, a pace of 2:50 per kilometre, and ran the second half in 1:02:00 after a 1:04:01 first half.

Men's race facts:

  • Almgren's 2:06:01 is the third-fastest time ever run on the New York course, behind Tamirat Tola's 2:04:58 course record (2023) and Geoffrey Mutai's 2:05:06 (2011). It is the fastest winning time since Tola's record.
  • He is the first man to win New York in his marathon debut since Gebre Gebremariam in 2010, and the first European-born winner since Giacomo Leone of Italy in 1996.
  • His time is four seconds off Suldan Hassan's Swedish record of 2:05:57.
  • Talbi's 2:06:43 in sixth was reported as the fastest time ever run by an American in New York.
  • Kipruto, who won in 2025 in a photo finish, finished fourth, one second behind Mofolo.

Women's results: top 10

Place Athlete Country Time
1 Sheila Chepkirui Kenya 2:24:36
2 Jessica McClain USA 2:24:42
3 Hellen Obiri Kenya 2:24:43
4 Edna Kiplagat Kenya 2:25:42
5 Mercy Chelangat Kenya 2:25:46
6 Carrie Ellwood USA 2:26:28
7 Weini Kelati USA 2:26:51
8 Paige Wood USA 2:27:29
9 Viola Cheptoo Kenya 2:28:34
10 Fabienne Königstein Germany 2:28:49

How the women's race unfolded. The women's race was tactical from the start and stayed that way for 40 km. A group of four — Chepkirui, Obiri, Weini Kelati and Mercy Chelangat — led at 25K in 1:27:27, and the lead pack had grown to six or eight by 30K (1:44:02) and 35K (2:01:15) as runners caught back up. Kelati dropped just before the pace lifted at 35K, which left Obiri and Chepkirui at the front with McClain and Chelangat chasing. Obiri led at 35K; Chepkirui had regained the lead by 40K (2:17:39), with Obiri almost level and McClain within striking distance. Chepkirui pulled clear over the final 2.2 km to win by six seconds, and McClain ran down Obiri in the last 200 metres to take second by one second.

Women's race facts:

  • Chepkirui's win is her second in New York after 2024. Obiri, the 2025 champion and course record holder at 2:19:51, was denied a third title.
  • McClain is the first American woman on the New York podium since Shalane Flanagan in 2018. (Flanagan won the race in 2017.)
  • Four of the top eight were American.
  • Sifan Hassan, the Olympic champion, withdrew in the week before the race after an illness disrupted her training. Fiona O'Keeffe also withdrew.
  • The winning time of 2:24:36 was more than five minutes slower than Obiri's course record from a year earlier — a reflection of how the race was run, not the field.

New York City Marathon course records

New York is a point-to-point course over five bridges with about 280 m of climbing, and it is not a world-record venue; the course records are the realistic benchmark.

Category Time Athlete Year
Men 2:04:58 Tamirat Tola (ETH) 2023
Women 2:19:51 Hellen Obiri (KEN) 2025

Almgren's 2:06:01 is now the third-fastest men's time in the race's history. For context on where New York sits against the record courses, see fastest marathon times ever and marathon world records.
